Annual Awards 2009/2010

24 May 2010

Saturday 22nd May's successful Seniors function at Rhymney RFC's Clubhouse saw the Annual Awards Presentation and Dance just eight days after the last game of the season. This was the 41st occasion on which the Club's Dinner has been accompanied by silverware, and the winners on the night were popularly received.

In welcoming those present, there were thanks from the top table to all those who had assisted in any way at all levels during the campaign, a strange and weather -haunted season in which the Brewers played some fine rugby at times and finished third, their highest position for some years. The elements caused the Rhinos' even more bizarre length of lay-off, but they stuck to the task and will hopefully be back in regular and successful action for the new campaign, when some talented ex-Youth products should be available.

It proved something of a happy Generation Game on the night, with fathers and sons to the fore. Committeeman Ken Barnes, himself a previous winner of that and other Cups, presented his son Ian with the Player accolade, having last year done the same at Rhinos' level for other son Chris, while Richard Davidson, having handed son Luke the Youth trophy, then picked up the Merit Award himself!

The Awards in full went to:

Centre IAN BARNES as PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Scrum half SIMON KING as CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR

Flanker JOSH PERRY as MOST PROMISING PLAYER

Wing GREG PLANT as the TOP TRY SCORER

Fly half STEVEN LANG as TOP POINTS SCORER

Prop RICHARD LANG and IAN BARNES, jointly, for MOST APPEARANCES

Prop SIMON JAMES as RHINOS' (2nds) PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Centre SIMON PARRY as CHARACTER OF THE YEAR

Youth supremo RICHARD DAVIDSON as MERIT TROPHY winner for his encouragement and development of Junior talent over many years, and

Youth captain LUKE DAVIDSON as YOUTH PLAYER OF THE YEAR.

Skipper MATTHEW JONES presented gifts to Tour hero IAN BREEN and Club Treasurer GAYNOR WILLIAMS.

Good luck then to the teams and to confirmed First XV coaches Justin Pinch and Sean Murphy for 2010-11.
